DTH means Direct-to-Home. It is also called satellite television. This technology is used to
view the television programme transmitted directly by the broadcaster.
DTH provides all television programmes with high quality picture and sound. This technology
is called Direct-to-Home because the signal comes directly from broadcaster to your home.
There will be no one in between broadcaster and you like local cable operator.
In the DTH, broadcaster receives TV channels from different programming source like HBO,
Star Movies etc. Broadcaster process theses received signals and transmit it to the satellite
which is approx 36000 km away from earth equator.
You can receive TV programmes directly from satellite by fixing one small dish antenna on the
terrace or balcony in the particular direction . And by connecting one STB (set top box) to
the dish antenna and to the TV you can enjoy TV programmes with various interactive
features like....
- Watch cricket match from different angles.
- Play various video games.
- Order your favorite movies.
- Watch TV channels in different languages.
- Channel locking facility with password.
- List of future programmes and many more.....
The main advantage of DTH is that it can reach to the remote areas where it is difficult for
cable to reach. As the length of cable increases the loss of signals also will increase.
Presently there are many companies all around the world who provides DTH services.
In United states of America there are two major companies SKY and DIRECTV who provides DTH
service. In United Kingdom BSKYB is the major company who entertains UK with high quality picture and
sound. In India Dish TV which is of ZEE group and the second is Tata sky which is the joint
venture of TATA and SKY both are providing the direct to home service in
India.
Many companies are providing different
different schemes to attract the customers like.......
PVR
The latest technology in the field of DTH is the PVR technology. PVR means Personal Video Recorder.
It is the device which stores television programmes in the storage device like hard disk. This device comes in the
form of STB ( set top box ) like DTH STB. The basic function of this device is like VCR which records the analog
signal on the magnetic tape.
PVR stores the audio and video of television programme on the hard disk in digital format. You can store your
favorite programmes for later viewing. There are many features available in the PVR. You can even PAUSE live
television programmes, you can also do rewind and forward of programmes.
Basically, there are two types of PVR
-
Single tuner PVR -
This single tuner PVR stores the same television programme which you are watching so that you can enjoy a
same programme when ever you want.
-
Dual tuner PVR - This dual tuner PVR can store same or any different programme other than what you are watching at the same time. If you are watching STAR programme at the same time you can record any other programme of any other channel.
This technology is widely used in America, UK and many other countries. In India many companies are planning
to launch PVR so that their customers can watch and records the programme whenever they want.
